Knit a classic: the Hailuoto *tikkuröijy*!

The *tikkuröijy*—also known as the *luotolainen*—is Finland’s only surviving traditional fisherman’s sweater. Knitted on the island of Hailuoto using the same pattern since the 19th century, it was originally made from Finnish sheep’s wool as workwear for fishermen. Today, the sweater is worn around the world for both everyday and festive occasions.

The book recounts the history and makers of the *tikkuröijy* sweater and includes clear instructions for the traditional design as well as for new items inspired by it—ranging from a French press cozy to a knitted garment for a pet. Makers from Hailuoto have been documenting information and stories about the sweater since 2014. The photographs were taken by Antti J. Leinonen, and the book also features historical imagery.
